Bog-standard orthodoxy -- I know that my Redeemer liveth and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth.  And, though worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God.

How do you reconcile your religious faith with being a peter-puffing boy-buggerer? I hope you've got your story straight because you're probably only a few hundred pipes away from having to explain yourself to Head Office. You might end up done to a turn, like one of your Kringle cakes, while spending an eternity spinning on devil dick. At least that's the opinion of our Mongolian jury.

This is a solid keel to have, I remain with retractable daggerboard pondering why western Biblical orthodoxy appears in analog (nearabouts) within the creation "myths" of native peoples, for example the Hopi:

Is their inundation/great flood narrative duplicative of the Biblical due to the later arrival of western invaders or do the tales of the Ark form a universal narrative that is culturally revised from nation to nation?

Track back to Azz's initial citation and the tour of heaven.

Is sexual "preference" in and of itself sin enough to roast for eternity or can good deeds spread through other chapters of life make the afterlife something to be graded on the curve?

What comes out of you is what defiles you. For from within, out of your hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile you. (TNIV, Mark 7:20-23)

Good grief have you never read the New Testament?  The impossibility of such a reconciliation is the point of the whole thing, of the bread and wine and the sign of the cross, why Jesus came to die so that God could make peace with His sin-wracked creation.  I will not explain myself but throw myself on the mercy of the court, where my Judge served my death sentence Himself because He loves me.

Redemption in essence presupposes sin, and given human nature we're all afflicted to one degree or another.

It wouldn't be much of an afterlife if God could wire you to behave one way and then simultaneously ban your from heaven for living out His will, yes?

I don't know how much can really be made of the flood story and its supposed universality.  The idea that waters might rise enough to cover the land and leave one swimming surely occurred many times to anyone pondering a tidal shoreline.  Seeing it stay within limits must have suggested some intelligent control that must be propitiated in the same way sacrifices ensured the sun's return.

In addition, fossil shells (which were used as some of the first jewelry) are often found on or in exposed rocks high in the mountains so people who knew where these creatures usually lived might easily have concluded that water once covered them.

No. It's on my Kindle, don't spoil it for me.

Edit: Too late. Thanks a lot, asshole!

This is logical, yet we know the Hopi live in an arid interior land, a land whose largest natural water feature is a deeply incised drainage canyon. Yet they speak of the great flood in terms not proscribed by tidal environs.

Indeed.

Plate tectonics, continental drift, pole migration, there are a plethora of natural forces and remnant fossil record that bespeak a rather violently active degree of planetary sloshing, if you will.

This rock seems to have a repeating cycle of extinction level events and catastrophic geologic uphevals, my thesis being that the universality of inundation narratives, myths, what have you...are indicative of no specific cultural ownership of these narratives.

https://www.ancient-code.com/before-noahs-great-flood-here-are-3-flood-stories-that-predate-the-bible/

Ancient Cuneiform Tablets and the Mesopotamian Flood

Translation of ancient cuneiform tablets discovered in the 19th century suggests the Mesopotamia Flood may have been an antecedent of Noah’s flood mentioned in the bible. The ancient Sumerian Nippur tablet is believed to describe the oldest account of the Great Flood and the creation of both humans and animals on Earth. It also records the names of Antediluvian cities on earth and their respective rulers.

In ancient Mesopotamian mythology, we find flood stories concerning the epics of Ziusudra, Gilgamesh, and Atrahasis.

In fact, the Sumerian King List divides its history into preflood (antediluvian) and postflood periods.
...

Not far from the Aztecs we find another flood story sent by the Gods.

The Unu Pachakuti is, according to Incan mythology, a flood sent by the God Viracocha to destroy the people near Lake Titicaca. This great flood is said to have lasted for 60 days and 60 nights.

Before creating humans, Viracocha created a race of giants that inhabited Earth, but he destroyed them in a flood as they proved to be unruly. The giants were eventually turned into stone.

Viracocha, one of the most prominent Andean deities decides to save only two people, in the massive flood, giving mankind a fresh start, and bringing ‘civilization’ to the rest of the world.

Oh I think we are all "wired" to smite our enemies and grab what's not ours (as any parent can attest), and generally fuck any accommodating hole -- I once saw a stripper fuck a pumpkin in a seasonal display with every appearance of relish.  As well as to love, and to be loved in return.  The hopeful triumph of the noble over the base instincts, and the gradual realignment of our stubborn, independent, selfish wills with the Divine is, Tennyson thinks (and so do I but that doesn't matter), what we're here for.

Strong Son of God, immortal Love,
   Whom we, that have not seen thy face,
   By faith, and faith alone, embrace,
Believing where we cannot prove;

Thine are these orbs of light and shade;
   Thou madest Life in man and brute;
   Thou madest Death; and lo, thy foot
Is on the skull which thou hast made.

Thou wilt not leave us in the dust:
Thou madest man, he knows not why,
He thinks he was not made to die;
And thou hast made him: thou art just.

Thou seemest human and divine,
   The highest, holiest manhood, thou.
   Our wills are ours, we know not how;
Our wills are ours, to make them thine.

Our little systems have their day;
   They have their day and cease to be:
   They are but broken lights of thee,
And thou, O Lord, art more than they.

The giant stories are interesting, too.  I forget some guy who hypothesized that the Cyclops might trace his origins to pygmy mammoth skulls found on islands in the Mediterranean with the single opening in the forehead where the trunk comes out.

Mercy, she must have been built like a parking garage to accommodate that gourd!  ;D

I'm sure it was a male stripper though, freakish.  :o

If you're into "The Grand Tour" the Columbia special from last season had some disturbing video of a young man in the country nonchalantly having his way with a donkey right out in the field...so casual, so bizarre!

And just a few verses down the real kicker:

Forgive what seem'd my sin in me;
   What seem'd my worth since I began;
   For merit lives from man to man,
And not from man, O Lord, to thee.

I shall dig into that.

I posted another link to the alleged "Kandahar Giant" that the US military is reporte to have engaged and eventually killed in the caves of Afghanistan.

We're back to the Annunaki and the Nephilim and our off-planet progenitors again.

If you're of a mind I recommend, but few I think bother to peruse, Steve Quayle's wonderful collection of links on giants in North America as well:

Quote
1 Chronicles 20:6 "In still another battle, which took place at Gath, there was a huge man with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot--twenty-four in all. He also was descended from Rapha." The Rapha or Rephaim, were referred to as dead ancestors who were very tall, with their king being measured at around 13 feet. The word Rephaim is translated to mean "those whose speech makes buzzing sounds," and that is intriguing as well, as such features have been heard among the Sasquatch.

More seasonal cheer -- this one makes the rounds every few years:  https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/7bdd74/the-time-a-pilgrim-got-the-death-penalty-for-having-sex-with-a-turkey

I love the awful, sterile modern prose, which does no justice to the scene in my mind:

Quote
The authorities worked to determine which animals Granger had had sex with, then killed them in front of him before executing Granger himself.
